What we adore Bordeaux varietals, especially Cabernet Sauvignon, is the unmistakable profile of black fruit – currant, raspberry, plum – against seductive cedar tones, nippy tannins and mouth-filling flavor. But: can we tell really the difference between Old World and New? Does the Haut Medoc’s “graphite and leather” born of Bordeaux’s unique gravelly soils really translate to a recognizable French stamp? Does California’s North Coast, flooded with sunshine, produce reds that are simpler, more straightforward, more open in youth as conventional wisdom would have us believe? Let’s find out together! We show 10 Cabernet-based wines, most of them served “blind”, not telling you what they are, and you’ll deduce, or cheerfully guess. Recent vintages on both side of The Pond have been terrific, so there will be plenty to appreciate.
