Amazing, transformative things happen to wine grapes at significant altitudes above sea level: with vine roots struggling to find nutrients, yields plummet, intensifying and flavor concentration; blazing sunshine thickens grape skins resulting in shocking color saturation; acidity levels rise in response to nighttime temps up to 50 degrees colder than daytime. And, best for us attentive tasters, seductive rocky tones appear in the wines’ flavor depth, reflecting the unforgiving soils. Struggling vines make great wine. We’ll taste terroir packed examples from around the globe: poignant whites from Alto Adige’s stunning Italian slopes and Austria’s Wachau, a cool white from French Savoie close to the Swiss border, muscular Cali Cab from Spring Mountain, high-toned Pinot Noir from the Santa Cruz Mountains, ultra-dense Malbec & Cab from both sides of the soaring Andes, Mt. Etna’s volcanic born beauties, and more. We’ll start upwards of 500 feet (150 meters) and surge onwards!
