2014 Mazzei 'Philip' Cabernet Sauvignon Tuscany
Winemaker Notes:This wine truly represents the different faces of contemporary Tuscan winemaking. It brings together the fragrance and elegance of wines produced in the traditional area of Chianti Classico, with the opulence and power of wines from the more recently discovered Maremma region. Deep, dark purple color with intriguing black cherry aromas, balsamic herbs, coffee and lightly toasted oak. Harmonious flavors of dark fruit on the palate, dried flowers, chocolate and vanilla. Exotic, complex character, full bodied with polished, velvety tannins, and a long, smooth finish.
CRITICAL ACCLAIM
Vinous - "The 2014 Philip is Mazzei's 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from estate vineyards in both Chianti Classico and Maremma. Ripeness and textural depth are pushed to the limit in this powerful, super-concentrated wine. Although not at all subtle, the 2014 speaks with distinction. Time in the glass adds brightness to the dark red cherry and plum notes in this plush, inviting wine. It will be interesting to see how the Philip ages. It is certainly impressive as a young wine."
Wine Spectator - "Rich and full of cherry, raspberry, tobacco and leather flavors. The tannins are mouthcoating on the finish, but this shows balance overall. Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2023. 5,000 cases made."
