2018 Mayacamas Merlot Mt. Veeder
Winemaker Notes: The wine opens with lifted aromatics of violet and lavender supported by a lovely fruit set of raspberry, plum, and dried blueberry. Savory tones of dried sage and fresh mint broaden the mid-palate, bringing detail and nuance to the wine’s mid-weight frame. The finish is persistent with lingering notes of red berry fruit, black tea, and dried herbs.
Blend: 94% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc
Vinous - "The 2018 Merlot is gorgeous. Floral and savory notes give the 2018 a striking bouquet. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2018 possesses remarkable depth and harmony. Rose petal, sage, mint and cinnamon complement the red berry fruit. The 2018 is such a distinctive wine. It can be enjoyed now, but readers who can cellar it will be in for a treat down the line. If opened young, a few hours of air does wonders in releasing all of the wine's fruit and structure. Dollops of Cabernet Franc round out the blend. The Merlot was aged in cask, while the Franc components were aged in barrel. Total time in oak was about 22 months."
Wine Enthusiast - "With 6% Cabernet Franc, both it and the Merlot aged in neutral French oak before spending additional time in foudre and barrel, this elegant wine is grippy in its youth, with undeniable structure and elegance. Chalky tannin and earthy iron, dried herb and violet accent beautiful layers of raspberry and plum. Built to age, enjoy best from 2028–2038."
