2020 Domaine A. & P. de Villaine 'La Fortune' Bourgogne Rouge Côte Chalonnaise
La Fortune is the Domaine's largest red wine vineyard at 2.3 hectares, a mere 5.7 acres. The vineyards are clay and limestone with vines averaging 20-25 years of age. Made with 2/3 whole clusters, 10-12 days in tank, and fermentation in wood vats. Yields were low and quality of fruit very high for 2018.
“Rarely have we had the opportunity to pick grapes from Fortune as beautiful, wonderful, sugarladen. Fruity, greedy and tender at the same time, you can drink it now or wait two or three years to enjoy all the freshness.” – producer note
Tasting Notes: Floral aromas of violets and dried roses mingle with strawberry and expand on the palate, with more savory notes of earth and black tea. The persistent finish is bolstered by fine tannins and a mineral core.
CRITICAL ACCLAIM
James Suckling - "This Bourgogne shows why the Cote Chalonnais is underrated. Brimming with black-cherry and wild-blackberry fruit, plus pronounced pepperiness, this is immediately appealing and has plenty of character, the crisp tannins and acidity lifting the finish very nicely. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold."
