CRITICAL ACCLAIM

John Gilman - "The 2020 Clos des Caillerets chez Chartron is even better! The stars must have aligned perfectly for this bottling, as I cannot recall ever tasting a more profound young vintage of this great cuvée. The bouquet soars from the glass in a complex blend of pear, apple, a stunningly complex base of chalky minerality, a touch of hazelnut, citrus zest, fresh nutmeg, vanillin oak and a potpourri of citrus blossoms in the upper register. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, deep and very, very long, with laser-like focus, stunning backend mineral drive and a very, very long, seamless and electric finish. Utterly brilliant premier cru! 2026-2060."

Vinous - "The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Clos du Cailleret 1er Cru is more reserved and austere on the nos compared to the Clos de la Pucelle, wet limestone and hints of oyster shell coming through with time. The palate is well balanced with a slightly honeyed entry, fine depth, hints of apricot and Clementine with a lightly spiced and tensile finish. Lovely, although I just prefer the Clos de la Pucelle. (91-93pts)"

Decanter - "Chartron is among the largest proprietors in Cailleret, with a hectare in total (and just over 0.8 hectares of that planted to red wine). The emphasis on the initial attack is citrus fruit and mineral; riper notes of passionfruit and mango develop in the glass. The wine is undoubtedly ripe, but there is plenty of structure and a pleasantly saline tang on the finish. Although it is not heavy, there is enough substance here to suggest that it will age well for years to come. Drinking Window 2021 - 2040."

Burghound - "A touch of mineral reduction lurks in the background of the ripe and fresh aromas of apple, pear, white flower and discreet spice nuances. The sleeker if less rich middle weight flavors flash more a more prominent bead of minerality on the delineated, more complex and lingering finale. This beauty is both stylish and very classy and a wine that should improve over most of a decade.*Outstanding*"

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - "Leaner than the Pucelles, the 2020 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos du Cailleret is a medium to full-bodied, taut and fine-boned wine evocative of grapefruit oil, white flowers, fresh pastry and herbs. Always an early picker, Jean-Michel Chartron began his harvest on August 14, chaptalizing some of his cuvées. The result is a set of fine-boned, delicate wines that are certainly nicely balanced, but which lack a bit of concentration and mid-palate plenitude to my palate, and which in some instances display a discreet herbaceous streak. Picking early served Jean-Michel very well in several recent vintages, most notably 2015, but I wonder whether it was the right choice in 2020. (90-92pts)"
