2021 Henri Gouges 'Les Vaucrains' Rouge 1er Cru Nuits-Saint-Georges
CRITICAL ACCLAIM
Tim Atkin - "Sitting on a dramatic 15% slope at 260-280 meters, these vines are almost 60 years old. They delivered the best wine in the Gouges stable this year thanks to the focus and freshness of the fruit. Plus, the tannins are refined and the acidity is buoyant but not marked. Sweet strawberries, perky pomegranate and spice drawer ooze through the solid finish."
John Gilman - "The 2021 Vaucrains from Domaine Gouges is another great wine in the making. The bouquet is deep, pure and complex, wafting from the glass in a blend of black cherries, sweet dark berries, venison, bonfire, a touch of chipotle pepper, coffee bean, a marvelously complex base of soil and a discreet framing of new wood. On the palate the wine is deep, complex and full, with a rock solid core of fruit, impeccable balance and grip, ripe, quite suave tannins and outstanding focus and backend mineral drive on the long and utterly complete finish. 94+"
Burghound - "Note: from a 1.08 ha mix of younger and older vines that average about 50+ years of age. Here too the restrained nose is cool, pure and distinctly earthy with more fruit aromas that derive from the red side of the spectrum. There is again excellent energy to the bigger-bodied and more mineral-driven flavors that flash a taut muscularity on the beautifully persistent finish that is shaped by a firm core of dense but relatively fine tannins. As is virtually always the case with the Gouges Vaucrains, this is built-to-age and a wine that will require extended patience. Excellent. *Outstanding!* (92-94pts)"
