2021 Lapostolle Apalta Red Blend Colchagua Valley
Wine Production: 100% hand harvested, strict fruit selection by state of the art Vistalys optical sorter. All fermentations were made in stainless steel tanks. The Apalta blend enhances the main characteristics of each variety: from Cabernet Sauvignon, its complexity and elegant structure; from Syrah, its exuberant and attractive aromas; and from the Carmenere, its roundness and spicy expression. 70% of the blend was aged for 12 months in a mix of new and second use French oak barrels. The wine was clarified and a very light filtration was done previous bottling.
Tasting Notes: Intense and deep red color with violet edges; Elegant, fine and well balanced nose with black fruits such as blackberry and black spicy aromas; Palate has a silky attack followed by red and black fruit, coffee and chocolate flavors with good tannins delivering a very good structure.
CRITICAL ACCLAIM
Vinous - "The 2021 Red Blend Apalta is 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 10% Carménère, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Syrah from Apalta, Colchagua, and was aged in used barrels. An intense purple in color. The attractive nose offers plum jam, pink pepper and hints of cinnamon. In the mouth, it’s both opulent and juicy with finely grained tannins. The fairly concentrated palate flows expansively before the easygoing, lingering finish. A ripe red given the cool year."
James Suckling - "Some dark olives to the mixture of red and black fruit. Cherries, plums and a dose of grilled spice. Medium-bodied, juicy and pretty linear with even tannins. 54% cabernet sauvignon, 23% merlot, 10% carmenere, 7% cabernet franc and 6% syrah. Drink now."
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - "The blend of the 2021 Apalta is quite different from the 2019 I tasted last time, with 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 10% Carmenere, 7% Cabernet Franc and 6% Syrah. It has a lot less Cabernet and more Merlot but still with a pristine and pure Bordeaux nose, herbal, spicy and peppery. It's medium to full-bodied but fine-boned with elegant tannins. It's impressive, and even more so when you look at the price tag. 120,480 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2022."
