Winemaker Notes: Dario Serrentino is the driving force behind il Mortellito, a small family-run estate in Val di Noto in the far south-eastern corner of Sicily. For years Dario sold off his grapes to Sicilian natural wine players like Frank Cornelissen and Lamoresca, and only just started to vinify his own grapes in 2014.
The grape frappato is like Sicily's version of pinot noir—it's fresh and fruity. And nero d'Avola is like its cabernet—earthy and dark. This bottle is a blend of both, making a fresh, kind of earthy, medium-bodied wine. It's in the middle, but in the best place in the middle. Mortellito is an all organic producer.
