2022 Brengman Brothers 'Wild Ferment Smelme Blanc' Leelanau Peninsula
Winemaker Notes: Classic Gewurztraminer with intense notes of spice, rose petals, lychee, grapefruit, peach kernel ang ginger. A light to medium bodied wine that floods the palate with tropical fruits that lingers into an off-dry finish. The last pick of the 2022 harvest. The Gewurztraminer grapes were left to hang and fully develop all the phenolic compounds. This vintage was created to mimic the Alsatian style where the flavors are bold, and the mouthfeel is heavier than if the fruit were to be picked earlier in the season. The wine was fermented and aged in a concrete egg prior to filtering..
Robert Brengman has directed the winemaking since its beginning and has taken the cellar reins himself with the 2017 vintage. He has always practiced dry farming, thinning the crop and harvesting the grapes by taste over chemistry. The goal has always been to develop a Leelanau terroir with an old-world spirit that, through time, becomes the benchmark for the region.
