2022 Caymus-Suisun Redgale Vineyard Grenache Solano County

Winemaker Notes: A vibrant, velvety red, our 2022 Grenache opens with intriguing scents of fruit compote, ripe strawberry and a sweet spice cabinet. A hint of the cellar adds freshness to the nose. Entry is lean, with vibrant acidity balanced by a smooth body and brooding tannins. Dark cherry and pomegranate mingle with underlying oak. The dry finish features grittiness that is rich and enduring but not bitter, accompanied by a lingering freshness and final hint of spice.

Redgale™ is our first attempt at growing Grenache. Planted in 2018, the vineyard sits on a southeast-facing slopes in a special area of land neighboring Napa, with San Francisco Bay in the distance. The Mediterranean climate led us to choose Grenache for this site: intense winds, abundant sunlight and dry conditions. Gusts of 20 mph can make it difficult to carry a conversation and my hair ends up in knots. Modeled after Chateauneuf-du-Pape, the vines are head-trained (free of a trellis) and spaced 12x12 ft. The deep red soil is embedded with stones - some too big to move by hand. Redgale™ refers to these two natural forces - red soil and strong wind - that drive every aspect of this wine. -Jenny Wagner, winemaker
