2022 Denner 'Theresa' White Blend Paso Robles
Winemaker Notes: Ron Denner built his state-of-the-art gravity flow winery on Vineyard Drive in Willow Creek in 2005 after spending several years developing the adjacent land from barley fields into vineyards.
Over the years, winemaker Anthony Yount made Denner into one of the great wineries of California through a combination of careful vineyard management (including dry-farming and organic practices) and non-interventionist winemaking. Today, Anthony continues his work at Denner as the consulting winemaker for head winemaker, Mark Williams.
In the cellar, Denner takes cues from the old world, working with a percentage of whole-cluster in his Rhone blends, relying on native yeasts for fermentation, and bottling their wines unfined and unfiltered. Of course, all of this is to translate, as faithfully as possible, the terroir of a great site, with Denner’s patchwork of calcareous clay vineyards soaring to more than 1,000 feet above sea level.
CRITICAL ACCLAIM
James Suckling - "Fermented in 3,000-liter Hungarian oak tanks, this complex and layered wine is made from white Rhone varieties. It’s 40% roussanne, 21% vermentino, 20% grenache blanc, 10% marsanne, 6% picpoul blanc and 3% clairette blanche. While ripe and generous, it’s also tangy and slightly tannic, with a fresh bite in texture. Medium-bodied. Drink or hold."
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - "The 2022 Theresa is a blend of Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Picpoul and Clairette. Initially reticent on the nose, it displays exotic aromas of nutty orchard fruits, struck flint, miso, cured meats and dried flowers after time in the glass. The palate is equally plump, juicy and refreshing, with a clean, layered finish that gains momentum and length rapidly. This is another beautiful example of Paso Robles's largely untapped potential for white wines. 93+"
Jeb Dunnuck - "The 2022 Theresa is based largely on Roussanne (40%) yet has smaller amounts of Vermentino, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, and other varieties. It has a slightly hazy gold hue as well as a singular nose of dried herbs, minty citrus, melon, and toasted nuts. Slightly reductive at first, it opens up beautifully with air, and it's medium-bodied, has a focused, elegant mouthfeel, good concentration, and a distinct salinity on the finish. It's going to absolutely shine on the dinner table."
