Winemaker Notes: Chateau Chasse-Spleen 2016 was produced with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. A typical blend of the Medoc, using all aspects of the grape varieties, using the special characteristics to create elegant wines. The color is deep garnet, limpid and bright. Chateau Chasse-Spleen 2016 has a very expressive nose. Aromas of black cherries and fresh roses are present. After aeration, there are notes of blackberries and pink peppercorn. The mouth is voluminous with a dense tannic framework. The tannins are tight, fine and satin-smooth. The finish is persistent with cocoa powder and licorice. There is no doubt that this Moulis has wonderful potential for aging and should be opened from 2022-2045.

CRITICAL ACCLAIM

James Suckling - "Aromas of cassis, black cherries, licorice, dried tobacco and wet earth. Some leafy character, too. Medium-bodied with chewy tannins and vibrant, juicy fruit character. Firm and compact with hints of crushed stones in the finish. A little timid at the end. 52% cabernet sauvignon, 40% merlot, 6% petit verdot and 2% cabernet franc. Best after 2024."

Vinous - "The 2019 Chasse-Spleen is very perfumed on the nose, offering vivid brambly red fruit, leather, undergrowth and cedar aromas that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and cohesive, with a sappy opening and fine acidity. Lightly spiced, showing plenty of substance on the finish. While not the most consistent estate, Chasse-Spleen has it in its grasp to make great wines, and the 2019 is one of them."

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - "Offering up aromas of cassis, plums, pencil lead and licorice, the 2019 Chasse-Spleen is medium to full-bodied, with a fleshy core of fruit, lively acids and ripe, powdery tannins that assert themselves on the finish with a very civilized expression of Moulis-typical grip. Forget it for a decade and follow it for the next two. Best after 2029. Rating: 92+"

Decanter - "A dark heady nose comprising blackcurrants, black cherries and some sweet cinnamon spices. This is a headier style, clearly powerful with well-handled, ripe fruit and a core of liquorice that gives it a more serious tone. It has good acidity and freshness with fine tannins that support the fruit and give weight and definition to the palate. Good intensity here."
