Winemaker Notes: Located on the Saint-Emilion plateau, on the right bank of Bordeaux, Chateau Villemaurine enjoys a privileged location indeed. Its magnificent vineyard is planted in clay-limestone soils upon asterious limestone.

Blending Merlot (80%) and Cabernet Franc (20%), the Chateau Villemaurine 2018 presents the refined and elegant character of a Saint-Emilion born from an exceptional limestone terroir. At the tasting, the Chateau Villemaurine 2018 displays a deep and concentrated color. A very fresh aromatic bouquet springs from the glass, enrobing the nose with its generous notes of black fruits. On the palate, the wine reveals a massive structure, supported by tannins of great finesse. With plenty of tension, the palate stretches into a finish of great elegance. A very fine vintage for Chateau Villemaurine embodying a great classic of the Saint-Emilion appellation.

CRITICAL ACCLAIM

James Suckling - "This is really fantastic with density and richness and lots of minerality. Full-bodied, layered and extremely long. This has so much density and agility in the center palate. Better than 2015 and 2016?"

Jeb Dunnuck - "Deeply colored, the 2018 Château Villemaurine comes from a terrific terroir of light clay over limestone (the classic terroir of the upper plateau around the village of Saint-Émilion) and is an 80/20 split of Merlot and Cabernet Franc resting in 75% new French oak. Spicy oak, blackcurrants, incense, and sandalwood notes all emerge from this full-bodied yet elegant and beautifully balanced 2018. It has plenty of power but shines more for its elegant, seamless texture. It’s worth pointing out that Hubert de Boüard now consultants here, and this 2018 is a brilliant wine in the making. 95-96pts"

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - "Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Villemaurine rolls sensuously out of the glass with notes of plum preserves, blueberry pie and Black Forest cake with touches of underbrush, spice cake, star anise and unsmoked cigars plus a hint of potpourri. Full-bodied, the palate is jam-packed with rich, seductive fruit, framed by plush tannins and lovely freshness, finishing long and layered. The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Aging is expected to be for 14 months in oak barriques, 75% new. 93-95pts"

Wine Enthusiast - "Firm tannins lie behind the attractive fruitiness of this ripe wine. It is a wine that is juicy and is likely to develop well. Barrel Sample: 91-93pts"
