2004 Krug Clos du Mesnil Champagne with Wood Box
Winemaker Notes: Combining outstanding purity and freshness with tension, vivacity and great balance, today Krug Clos du Mesnil 2004 reveals a precise signature and a striking grace. At first sight, a vibrant luminosity and intense golden color redolent of ripe wheat. On the nose, expressive aromas of toffee apple, caramel, ripe citrus fruits and lightly toasted nuts. On the palate, it opens with astonishing generosity and breadth. Initial hints of brown sugar, candied ginger and pecan give way to notes of citrus fruits as it bursts into an explosion of freshness enhanced by a very long and elegant finish.
The year 2004 called for patience with a crisp winter and chill spring keeping temperatures in Champagne cool for an exceptionally long time. May brought a gentle warmth to the region and in late summer the grapes ripened perfectly in the radiant sunshine. Krug Clos du Mesnil 2004 exalts the crisp purity of a walled plot in the village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, of a single grape variety, Chardonnay, and a single year, 2004.
The House of Krug chooses to create Krug Clos du Mesnil only in years that provide the ideal conditions for the full potential of this walled plot of Chardonnay grapes to be revealed. Protected by stone walls since 1698, the 1.84-hectare Clos du Mesnil vineyard lies in the heart of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, one of the most prized Chardonnay villages in Champagne.
Vinous - "The 2004 Clos du Mesnil captures all the pedigree of this epic Blanc des Blancs vintage. A soaring, majestic Champagne, the 2004 dazzles from the very first taste with its crystalline purity and brightness. In two tastings so far, the 2004 has been nothing less than a total showstopper. The vertical structure and pure, tightly-coiled power are the stuff dreams are made of. There is little doubt the 2004 is one of the very finest Clos du Mesnils in recent memory. Will it join the 1979, 1988 and 1996 as one of the all-time greats? Now, that is a tasting I would love to do! 98+"
James Suckling - "Aromas of lemon sorbet, chalky notes and white flowers with toasted almonds, backed by a strong, stony mineral thread. Super acidity drive on the palate with a core of pure lemons and grapefruit. Long, smooth-tannin finish. This is both concentrated and elegant. A single location and single variety. Amazing quality here. Drink or hold."
Wine Spectator - "Evocative of a Bernini sculpture, this vibrant Champagne is equally about the statuesque frame of acidity and chalky underpinning as it is the finely honed details, including the silken texture, the aromas of lime blossom, saffron and incense, and the expressive, woven range of creme de cassis, espresso, kumquat, crystallized honey and toast flavors. Long and focused, echoing the rich profile on the finish. Drink now through 2034. 1,129 cases made."
