2015 Peter Michael 'Au Paradis' Estate Red Blend Oakville
Winemaker Notes: With a deep red ruby color, 2015 Au Paradis offers elegant notes of cassis, blackberry blossom, black cherry , chocolate, licorice, cinnamon and an exotic touch of orange rind. In the mouth, the texture is velvety and loaded with black currant, cassis liqueur, game, dark chocolate, plum eau de vie, black olive, iron-like minerality and discreet notes of fur. The finish is round, refined, complex and meaty with incredible length. This wine will continue to develop and age gracefully for three decades or more.
Au Paradis is our estate grown Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from the Oakville vineyard that we purchased in 2009. The wine itself is at least 75% Cabernet Sauvignon with the balance being Cabernet Franc. The red Aiken series soil of this vineyard site produces a meaty expression of these varietals. The name translates to “in heaven” and recalls a magical moment at a Michael Family campout on a hilltop in our vineyards. They awoke to discover a sea of fog below them and a bright new day above. The youngest grandson, then about six, asked, “Are we in heaven?”
The winter was dry, with only 75% of normal rainfall, continuing four years of drought. Unseasonably warm temperatures accelerated bud break by three to four weeks. March brought welcomed rain. Fortunately, bloom had already occurred so the crop was unaffected. Steady warm temperatures dominated the remainder of the growing season providing ideal ripening conditions. The crop load level was balanced and didn’t require any hand thinning. A surge of hot temperatures accelerated the pace of harvest and made picking decisions crucial this vintage. No doubt affected by the drought, juice yields were quite low, resulting in wines with incredible depth and concentration.
Located in the heart of the Oakville AVA’s famed “red dirt” in Napa Valley, Au Paradis is exactly where its name translates, “In Heaven.” Planted in the foothills on the east side of the valley on a raised, gently sloping plateau, the Bordeaux varietals develop into a classic style with silky tannins and deep red fruit. Between 500 and 600 feet, 26 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot look down on the valley and across to the Mayacamas. The slope and hillside location provide ideal sun exposure during the day and helps develop the lush, intense fruit one would expect from such a magnificent property.
Jeb Dunnuck - "Aged 18 months in 50% new oak, it has a more masculine, mineral-laced style offering red and black curants, crushed rocks, chocolate, and spice. Deep, rich, concentrated, and in need of 4-6 years of cellaring, this Chateau Latour-lookalike is an awesome , classic Napa Cabernet Sauvignon! 99+"
James Suckling - "A bright and vivid red with aromas of terracotta, fresh herbs, currants and blackberries. Some mint, floral notes and a touch of chocolate, too. Full body and ultra-fine tannins that are layered with ripe fruit. Love the length and beauty. Changes all the time in the glass. A fascinating wine."
Antonio Galloni - "Peter Michael’s 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Au Paradis captures the essence of this well-exposed site on Oakville’s Upper Plateau. Dark cherry, plum, sage, mint, kirsch, espresso and chocolate are explosive in this plush, deeply textured Cabernet Sauvignon. The 50% new oak adds a dollop of sweetness without overpowering the wine. This is a gorgeous 2015."
Robert Parker - "Composed of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Cabernet Franc, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Au Paradis has a deep garnet-purple color and nose of crushed blackcurrants, blackberries and mulberries with hints of menthol, violets, bay leaves and cloves, plus a waft of pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is energetic and yet tautly structured with firm, grainy tannins and a lively backbone framing the muscular fruit, finishing long and earthy. Give it 2-3 years in bottle and drink it over the next 25+. 1,620 cases were made."
