Light yellow-gold. Pungent citrus pith and pear on the floral-accented nose. Juicy and broad on entry, then tighter in the mid-palate, offering deep lemon curd and bitter pear skin flavors, with a touch of cherry pit. A nervy mineral note adds bite and an edge to a nicely brisk, persistent finish.

Intriguingly, a Blanc de Blancs, Chardonnay wine from the prime Pinot Noir village of Ambonnay in the Montagne de Reims. That delivers an equally intriguing wine, seemingly fresh, simple, apple and citrus-fruited at first, but then a meatiness and creaminess develops. The mousse is fine and persistent, the acidity riveting, but that iron fist in a velvet glove backbone drives the finish. I really enjoyed this grower Champagne.

Coutier’s NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru is one of the great under the radar gems in Champagne. Brisk and finely cut, the Blanc de Blancs captures a striking juxtaposition of Ambonnay richness and Chardonnay citrus/mineral-driven cut. This edition, based on 2016, with 40% reserve wines, is especially fine. The price? A steal. Dosage is 6.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: February, 2020.
