2018 Domaine Nico 'Grand Père' Pinot Noir Uco Valley
Villa Bastias is located in Tupungato within the Uco Valley. The vineyard is old and planted with Dijon Clones in 1993. The Grand Père parcel is more shaded than the sunnier Grand Mere section, with delicate red fruits and high acidity. Wine-making is traditional and gentle for these delicate wines. Yields are extremely low in both sites due to the age of the vineyard. Fermented with 20% whole clusters and indigenous year in Oak roll-fermentor of 600L and 50% stainless-steel tanks. Punch-down extraction was done by hand with max temperature reaching 25 Celsius for 7-14 days. Malolactic fermentation took place in barrel.
James Suckling - "This has layered aromas of red and blue fruit with a sappy edge. The palate has such freshness with energetic, rich red-cherry and raspberry flavors and a smooth, crisp finish."
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - "The 2018 Grand Père Pinot Noir comes from the same vineyard at 1,120 meters in altitude in Villa Bastías in Tupungato as the Grand Mère, but this comes from very stony soils that have an important limestone content. So, there's more austerity here. The wine is only 13% alcohol, and it's stonier (like the soils), with very fine and chalky tannin's, pungent flavors and an ethereal texture. It fermented with 20% full clusters in oak roll fermentors and matured in barrel for 18 months."
