2018 Joseph Voillot Volnay '1er Cru Les Fremiets'
Winemaker Notes: The 2018 Domaine Joseph Voillot Volnay Les Fremiets Premier Cru from a parcel that is up-slope, and the wine is very calcaire, or limestony; you literally taste the stone in this elegant, intensely perfumed wine. This is Voillot’s most quintessential Volnay.
1.5 acres whose vines date from 1932, 1950, and 1978. One of those 1932 vines is pictured in the last photo above, and its right cane can just be seen arcing downward—it's one of a handful of very traditional "mother" vines among this group of old vines, directed downward into the ground to take root before continuing along the trellis. This parcel is up slope, and the wine is very calcaire, or limestony—you taste the stone in this elegant, intensely perfumed wine. It's Voillot's most quintessential Volnay, yet paradoxically the vineyard borders the Pommard AC.
CRITICAL ACCLAIM
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - "Mingling notions of cassis, cherries and plums with hints of coniferous forest floor and dark chocolate, the 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Fremiets is medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with an enveloping, multidimensional core, fine energy and a mouthwateringly saline finish. "
Wine Spectator - "A brawny, concentrated version, this red evokes black cherry, blackberry, earth and lavender flavors. It's marked by beefy tannins, finishing with dark fruit, spice and iron notes. Best from 2023 through 2038. 75 cases imported."
Burghound - "A mildly toasty nose has enough menthol present to mention on the bright liqueur-like aromas of poached plum, earth and soft spice nuances. There is good volume and an attractively sappy texture to the delicious flavors that deliver good persistence on the slightly rustic finale. In contrast to the preceding wines, this will need at least a few years of patience."
