2019 Chateau Carbonnieux Blanc Pessac-Leognan
Winemaker Notes: Chateau Carbonnieux white is a legendary wine. It is said that in the 18th century it was introduced to the Sultan of Constantinople's palace because of its clarity and was called "mineral water from Carbonnieux", thus defying the Islamic law. The clay–limestone of Garonne gravel found in the Pessac-Leognan Appellation certainly produces the best dry white wines in the Bordeaux region. When young, Carbonnieux white wines are delightfully refreshing and pure with a fruity, floral intensity. When mature they develop hints of dried and candied fruits giving scope for a large range of gastronomic pairings. The batches which will form part of this "cru classe" will be blended so as to induce an excellent complicity between the grape varieties. The chosen Semillon grapes will add structure to the liveliness of the Sauvignon grapes by giving them roundness and volume on the palate.
Wine Enthusiast - #64 TOP 100 CELLAR SELECTIONS 2022 - "The estate is noted for white wine, and this latest release lives up to the reputation. This textured, mainly Sauvignon Blanc wine has tight acidity set against wood aging and ripe citrus and white-fruit flavors. Drink the wine from 2024. "
Decanter - "A great Carbonnieux, with careful balance of juicy, salt-edged minerality and creamy nectarine and apricot fruits. Always a real highlight of the whites of the appellation and delivering another hit in 2019. Tasted twice two weeks apart. A yield of 40hl/ha."
Vinous - "The 2019 Carbonnieux Blanc was picked from 29 August to 18 September at 42hl/ha and aged in 25% new oak. It has an intense bouquet with lime zest, peach skin and beeswax scents, nicely focused with good attack. The palate is very well balanced with lovely pineapple and orange pith notes on the entry. Very cohesive with a tangy and vigorous finish. Excellent. (91-93pts)"
Jeb Dunnuck - "Plenty of honeyed peach and nectarine notes emerge from the 2019 Château Carbonnieux Blanc. This nicely textured, medium-bodied white has good concentration, well-integrated acidity, and a clean, balanced style that's going to drink nicely out of the gate. (90-92pts)"
