2020 Domaine du Pegau 'Cuvée Reservée' Châteauneuf-du-Pape Southern Rhone
Winemaker’s Notes: Dark red with a purple body. Aromas of black ripe fruits like morello cherries and raspberries, juniper berries, black pepper and garrigue. After several years of ageing, the aromas will be characterized by plums, dried stone fruits, leather, fur, and sandalwood. The palate is round, rich and powerful with soft tannins. With time, it will evolve into a more complex and spicy wine.
Try pairing this wine with red grilled meat, lamb shoulder with thyme and dishes of tapas and curry.
CRITICAL ACCLAIM
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - " I was even more impressed by the 2020 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Réservée than the 2019. Boasting crazily complex floral scents, garrigue, raspberries and cherries, this is one incredibly perfumed example of Pegau. Medium to full-bodied, silky, elegant and long, this is quintessential Pegau. My tastings during my evening visit to Domaine du Pegau included a number of other wines, both from Chateau Pegau and Selection Laurence Feraud. Those will be included in my follow-up coverage of other appellations of the Southern Rhône. For this report, I've focused on the current and upcoming releases from the property itself. Barrel Sample: 96-98"
Vinous - #49 Vinous Top 100 of 2024 - "The 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée is one of the strongest vintages for this wine in recent history. It is magnificent, soaring from the glass with pungent aromas of crème de cassis, ripe raspberry and strawberry, cured meat, tobacco, licorice, iodine and garrigue. Full-bodied, vibrant to the core and offering a multidimensional profile, this wine is really, really good. The Féraud family and the entire team deserve a round of applause for this sublime Cuvée Réservée, which will still be kicking ass 20 years from now."
James Suckling - "Brimming with forest berries, this has excellent concentration and wonderful freshness for the warm vintage, plus fine tannins and a slew of cocoa-powder and spicy notes at the long, polished finish. (94-95pts)"
Jeb Dunnuck - "The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Réservée, which was tasted from multiple foudres, is solid as well, with the more elegant style of the vintage as well as classic Pégau goodness. Lots of peppery herbs, leather, Provençal spice, and some meaty notes define the bouquet, and it's medium to full-bodied and balanced on the palate, with lots of classic Pégau style and flair. It’s always a great tasting with Laurence Féraud, and the quality at this address remains sky-high, both with their reds and their whites. I was thrilled to see the 2020s show better this go-round, and this will certainly be a solid vintage. Barrel Sample: 93-95”
