2021 Moccagatta Barbaresco ‘Basarin’ Piedmont

100% Nebbiolo grown in the commune of Babaresco, where calcareous blue marl soils dominate. All of the fruit comes from the slopes of the Muncagöta cru, which happens to be the dialect form of “Moccagatta”. The grapes are macerated on the skins in temperature-controlled steel tanks, then the wine is aged in French oak barriques, of which approximately 40% are new, for 18 months. 1,300 cases produced annually.

Jeb Dunnuck - "A saturated ruby/magenta in color, the 2021 Barbaresco Basarin shows off lovely, ripe layers with spiced accents and also has notable oak spice, but it seems a bit less overt here. It’s more red-fruited and has a slightly higher-toned profile in its notes of chocolate covered cherries, baking spices, violets, and incense. Medium-bodied, it has good drive and energy to its fresh acidity, and its finely coiled tannins add a plushness to the texture, with a chalkier, slightly more linear feel, although it’s still ripe all the way through its long finish. I like this a bit more for drinking now, but it should age gracefully over the coming 10-12 years."
