Winemaker Notes: Vosne-Romanee Les Beau Monts Premier Cru is one of the largest of the Vosne-Romanée premier crus. This vineyard lies upslope and adjacent to Échezeaux and is separated from Richebourg only by the smaller Les Brûlées. Its distinct personality comes from its more southerly exposure and its marl and clay soils. The wine shows aromas and flavors of red berries, herbs, and purple flowers. The palate is rich with ripe fruit and medium weight with bright acidity and fine tannins. Aging in 30-60% new Burgundian piece brings notes of vanilla, toast, and baking spices.Red Burgundy might be the world’s most flexible food wine. The wine’s high acidity, medium body, medium alcohol, and low tannins make it very food-friendly. Red Burgundy, with its earthy and sometimes gamey character, is a classic partner to roasted game birds, grilled duck breast, and dishes that feature mushrooms, black truffles, or are rich in umami.
CRITICAL ACCLAIM
Decanter - "Les Beaux Monts is situated next to Aux Brûlées but makes a very different style of wine in the Grivots' hands. This is chalky, racy and energetic, with subtle reduction, fine-grained tannins and a finish that lingers on the tongue."
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - "The 2017 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts is also showing very well, offering up aromas of sweet Asian spices, rose petal, plums, cassis and dark chocolate. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with good depth and dimension, vibrant fruit and a sapid, expansive finish."
Vinous - "The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru has an extraordinarily transparent bouquet - you can really feel the terroir in this wine. There is an almost pastille-like purity here. The palate is sappy on the entry with very good depth and plenty of matière, offering dark berries, cola and a touch of white pepper on the finish. Maybe the Aux Brûlées has a little more sophistication? Still, this is very fine."
Burghound - "This is firmly reduced though the underlying fruit does not seem quite as ripe. The medium weight flavors are less concentrated but more mineral-driven and markedly more refined with a lovely inner mouth perfumed and delineation that also suffuses the lingering finish. This is certainly very good but it doesn't quite have the same depth of material compared to the best of these Vosne 1ers."
